In last night’s first Presidential debate, Governor Romney actually mentioned Tip O’Neill. He was referring to what we now consider iconic moments of political bipartisanship – specifically how Regan and O’Neill worked together to “tweak social security.” (The transcript of the debate is available here: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/03/us/politics/transcript-of-the-first-presidential-debate-in-denver.html?pagewanted=all.)
Recently, the O’Neill/Regan era of politics has been viewed with nostalgia, held up as a time when politicians from the opposing parties worked together. But we tend to forget the bitter battles the two men waged against each other.
Do you think Tip get a mention in debate #2?
