After the Storm

St. Hedwig’s Church, 99 -101 Otis Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts after the Hurricane of 1938.

The New England Hurricane of 1938 went by several names:  Great New England Hurricane, Yankee Clipper, Long Island Express, or simply the Great Hurricane.  A Category 3 hurricane that made landfall on Long Island on September 21st, the Great Hurricane had winds up to 160 mph.  It was the largest, deadliest hurricane to hit New England since The Great Colonial Hurricane of 1635 – killing 800 people and destroying 57,000 homes.

As these postcards from the Cambridge Room postcard collection attest, it was devastating.
