A Popular Winter Activity: The Parks Department, 1954

A Popular Winter Activity, City of Cambridge Directory, 1946, p. 41.

In the 1946 Centennial edition of the City of Cambridge Directory, the Parks and Recreation Department, run by Stephen H. Mahoney, outlined Cambridge’s 38 parks valued at $1,865,380.  With the launch of the municipal recreation program, the Department sought to offer a variety of activities indoors and outdoors to all age groups.  In the summer, Cambridge citizens could enjoy 3 bathing beaches and a golf course.  Community activities such as neighborhood social evenings, dances, and card parties added “joy to the winter evenings.” Particular attention was given to pre-school students and school-age students were given tennis instruction and training for competitive boat races on the Charles River.
